**Very Big Sad News in Emmerdale: James Chase Reflects on Public Reaction to Tom and Belle’s Story**
Emmerdale actor James Chase, who portrays Tom King in the gripping abuse storyline alongside Belle Dingle, has opened up about the intense public response to their tumultuous narrative. From the onset of their relationship, Tom has gradually revealed his true nature through a disturbing pattern of mental and physical abuse directed at Belle.
The storyline took a harrowing turn when Belle discovered she was pregnant, prompting her to make the difficult decision to undergo a secret termination. When she deceitfully tells Tom that she had a miscarriage, his fury escalates, culminating in a violent outburst in the barn where he inadvertently electrocutes himself as Belle escapes the village.

Speaking candidly to Digital Spy and other media outlets, James Chase recounted the reactions he has encountered from the public amid this emotionally charged plot. Despite the dark nature of Tom’s character and the storyline’s intense moments, Chase expressed gratitude that he hasn’t faced negativity from fans in public settings.
“I haven’t really had anyone be mean to me on the street at all,” Chase shared. “I was walking back after we filmed in the studio the other day, and somebody was on his phone walking through the bike lane. He looked up and saw me, and his face kind of dropped. He tracked me as I walked past him, but he didn’t say anything. I haven’t had any eggs thrown at me or anything like that. It’s been good, to be honest.”
Acknowledging the challenging nature of the storyline, Chase emphasized that he was prepared for the public reaction given the storyline’s impactful content. “I always knew this role was going to have this storyline within it,” he explained. “Even when Tom was a relatively good guy for the first six months, I knew this was going to happen because this was the agreement we had initially.”
He continued, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in portraying such sensitive topics: “Like me and Eden Taylor-Draper, who plays Belle, have said before, you have to honor the storyline as realistically as possible because this is something that does go on. If the audience do hate you, it’s a good sign that you’re doing it properly.”
As Emmerdale continues to delve into the ramifications of Tom and Belle’s tumultuous relationship, Chase’s insights into the storyline’s reception underscore the show’s commitment to raising awareness about domestic abuse while delivering compelling drama.
